🎖️ From New Cadet to Leader: The Air Cadet Journey
Every cadet starts somewhere — and in the Air Cadet program, that starting point is just the beginning of an incredible journey.
At 15 Medicine Hat Royal Canadian Air Cadets, youth don’t just participate in activities — they grow into leaders. Through structured training, mentorship, and real responsibility, cadets develop skills that stay with them for life.
✈️ Starting Out as a New Cadet
All cadets begin at the rank of Air Cadet (Cdt).
In their first year, cadets focus on learning the fundamentals, including:
- Drill and teamwork
- Basic leadership skills
- Aerospace and aviation knowledge
- How the squadron operates
New cadets are supported every step of the way, making it easy to feel welcome and confident from the start.
📈 Growing Through the Ranks
As cadets gain experience and complete training levels, they have the opportunity to progress through the rank structure.
Advancement is based on:
- Participation and effort
- Completion of training requirements
- Demonstration of leadership and responsibility
Each new rank represents growth, achievement, and increased responsibility within the squadron.
🤝 Learning to Lead
One of the most valuable parts of the Air Cadet program is leadership development.
As cadets advance, they begin to:
- Lead small groups and activities
- Mentor newer cadets
- Assist with training
- Take on more responsibility during parade nights and events
This hands-on leadership experience helps cadets build confidence and develop strong communication and decision-making skills.
🌟 Opportunities to Take Initiative
Senior cadets play a key role in the squadron.
They may:
- Help plan and run activities
- Support instructors and staff
- Lead teams during exercises and events
- Represent the squadron in competitions and community events
These experiences prepare cadets for leadership roles both inside and outside the program.
💡 Skills That Last a Lifetime
The leadership skills developed in Air Cadets go far beyond the program.
Cadets gain:
- Confidence in themselves
- Public speaking skills
- Time management and responsibility
- Teamwork and problem-solving abilities
These are skills that benefit cadets in school, future careers, and everyday life.
✈️ A Journey Worth Taking
Every cadet’s journey is different — but every cadet grows.
Whether a cadet stays for one year or progresses through the entire program, they leave with stronger confidence, valuable skills, and experiences they’ll never forget.
