❌ 5 Myths About Air Cadets — Busted!

When people first hear about Air Cadets, they often have questions — and sometimes a few misconceptions.

At 15 Medicine Hat Royal Canadian Air Cadets, we hear these myths all the time. Let’s clear them up so you can better understand what the program is really about.

❌ Myth #1: “Cadets are part of the military”

The truth:
Cadets are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and there is no obligation to join the military.

The program is supported by the Canadian Armed Forces, but its purpose is youth development — focusing on leadership, citizenship, fitness, and aviation.

❌ Myth #2: “You have to want to be a pilot”

The truth:
While aviation is a big part of Air Cadets, it’s not the only focus.

Cadets can explore:

  • Leadership and teamwork
  • Community service
  • Outdoor training and survival
  • Sports and fitness
  • Marksmanship and biathlon

There’s something for everyone — not just future pilots.

❌ Myth #3: “It’s expensive”

The truth:
The Air Cadet program is completely free to join.

Uniforms, training, and many activities — including summer training opportunities — are provided at no cost. This makes it accessible to families across the community.

❌ Myth #4: “It’s too strict or intimidating”

The truth:
Air Cadets is structured — but it’s also supportive and welcoming.

Cadets are encouraged to challenge themselves, but they are guided by trained staff and supported by their peers. New cadets are helped every step of the way, making it easier to feel comfortable and confident.

❌ Myth #5: “You need experience to join”

The truth:
No experience is required.

Cadets join from all backgrounds, and everything is taught from the beginning. Whether it’s leadership, drill, or aviation, cadets learn step-by-step in a supportive environment.
